Background
Our client was a mid-sized carrier of circa £1.7bn GWP in the middle of a major business transformation exercise. This had led to its executive board seeking to strengthen and galvanise its senior underwriting team. The head of commercial property had identified the need to find a new head of international property, who would be able to assist in the remediation of the existing property portfolio.
At the time, the property portfolio had a significant North American focus – the team underwrote several Fortune 1000 accounts – and the open market international D&F portfolio only made up a small part of the overall book. The strategy was to reduce the company’s US CAT exposure and extend its footprint into other non-US geographical territories. The client envisioned that the book would have a weighting towards non-proportional placements and would be written exclusively on Lloyd’s paper to render better long-term results.
